Case Study – Distribution Centres Networking & Infrastructure Projects

Distribution centres are the foundation of a supply network, as they allow a single location to stock a vast number of products. A typical retail distribution network operates with centres set up throughout the country, with each centre serving a number of stores.

ISG has many years of experience working in retail and distribution centre environments, designing, deploying and managing complex IT infrastructure solutions to meet our clients needs.

Motor Manufacturer – UK Parts Distribution Centre

Working for the UK’s top selling car brand in their UK Parts D.C. in Northamptonshire, the building held the record for being the largest single–storey, single–roofed building in Europe with a footprint in excess of 180,000m2, that’s big enough to fit 30 standard size
football pitches!
ISG were employed to complete an upgrade of the edge networking hardware and associated physical infrastructure in preparation for an IP telephony roll out. Chosen due to its professionalism in both networking and infrastructure, ISG technology was responsible for the Project Management and installation of Wireless Access Points, LAN switches and all associated physical infrastructure (cabling & containment) throughout this site.
The installation required 30,000m of fibre optic cable to provide a new high speed backbone across this vast building. The engineering teams worked at a height using motorised access platforms to complete the high level installation. “This is a good example of an IT project delivered spot on time and budget,“ said Raymond Damerow, Director of Parts Supply and Logistics.

UK’s Largest Toy Retailer – UK Distribution Centre

Our customer, the world’s leading retailer of Toys, Babycare and Family Leisure products has its UK distribution Centre in the West Midlands, with a footprint of over 60,000m2 (over 650,000 sqft) the high tech, automated facility is responsible to stock distribution to over 100 stores across the UK as well as fulfilling online orders direct to customers.
Requiring an upgrade to the existing Wireless Network and CCTV Network would prove challenging as the height of the warehouse is over 25m at its peak. ISG was chosen to complete the physical deployment of the equipment as well as additional cabling infrastructure, change-over engineering resources and project management for this fast track project.
Working from some of the tallest motorised access platforms in the UK our IPAF trained and qualified engineers completed the installation, cabling, change-over and testing of the new Wireless infrastructure on time and to the agreed budget, leaving a very happy and relieved client ready in plenty of time for their seasonal Christmas peak trading!

Building Materials Distribution Centre

Our client is a leading distributor of specialist building products in Europe, with strong positions in its core markets of Insulation and Energy Management, Exteriors and Interiors. Operating from nine European countries and with around 400 branches in the UK our client has an annual turnover of around £2.6bn.
As part of their expansion and consolidation plans a new 140,000 sqft warehouse and distribution centre has been built in Trafford Park, Manchester. Requiring a complete IT infrastructure fit-out the client chose ISG Technology, a long standing and trusted infrastructure partner, to complete all of the onsite services.

The project included the supply and installation of 570 data outlets to the three-storey office area and a further 80 data outlets throughout the warehouse space, cabled back to five separate communications rooms, created by ISG as part of the project. ISG also installed a high-speed fibre optic backbone to provide resilient connectivity across the entire site in addition to HDMI cabling for Audio Visual connections.
A Wi-Fi network consisting of 32 access points was designed and installed to provide mobile communications throughout the warehouse area in addition to the installation, patching and commissioning of the LAN switches and routers to each cabinet location.

Completing the project on time and to budget will allow our clients expansion and consolidation plans to move ahead at full speed!
