Case Study: South Wales Schools
“This investment will benefit pupils and communities now and in the future. I am very pleased that we are able to commit a considerable amount of funding into such an important project”
Cllr Julia Magill – Cabinet Member for Education, Lifelong Learning and Libraries
The 21st Century Schools Programme is a collaboration between the Welsh Assembly and Local Authorities in Wales to create the right schools in the right places, and to deliver a range of improvements to enhance education and development in the area.
To support the programme, WiFi installations were required in over 120 Primary and Secondary schools in the South Wales region. Each school’s environment differed and so detailed deskside and on-site surveys were required to ensure coverage and service quality.
Due to the nature of the access and traffic, the WiFi network needed to be entirely separate from the School’s existing LAN. The works were required to buildings of all ages and constructions and all works had to be completed without disrupting the operating efficiency of each school.
ISG set-up and closely managed the deployment of the WiFi network in each of the schools. Where surveys revealed the possibility of dangerous materials such as asbestos, cabling was rerouted.
Because all work needed to be undertaken ‘out of hours’ and because each secondary school typically required around 100 Access Points ISG ensured one of its qualified Project Managers was on-site to oversee each installation throughout the programme.
Across the 120 schools, over 2,500 WiFi access points were installed and commissioned.
David Harris, Head Teacher of Tredegarville Primary School in central Cardiff, said pupils already saw the benefits. Among the positive impacts has been an improvement in standards of literacy and numeracy through exploring more creative uses of ICT, ‘The challenge has been to continue to develop more imaginative and innovative ways of delivering the statutory curriculum, while maintaining and building upon standards of achievement’ said Harris.
